How do you INSPIRE?

INSPIRATION. A word that is both powerful and intimidating yet so needed and desired by all.

How does one become inspired and how can one inspire others? Inspiration comes to some more naturally than others and I bet there are countless reasons behind that. Oh! You think I have the answer? No, sorry! I am still searching for that. If you happened to have some insight, please make sure to comment.

Have you ever wondered, what the difference is between inspiration and motivation? I didn’t. I guess now I do. In case you are wondering, let’s start with the definition.

in·spi·ra·tion (pronounced – inspəˈrāSH(ə)n). Noun: inspiration.
–       The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative; be a guiding light to others. Other synonyms: encouragement, influence, vision, insight, innovation, example, catalyst, impulse.

in·spire (pronounced – inˈspī(ə)r). Verb: inspire.
–       To fill someone with the urge or ability to do or feel something; to arouse, spark, energize an idea or action. Create a feeling; especially a positive one. Other synonyms: stimulate, motivate, galvanize, influence, electrify, trigger, produce, bring to surface.

mo·ti·va·tion (pronounced – mōdəˈvāSH(ə)n). Noun: motivation.
–       The reason or reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way; the general desire or willingness of someone to do something. Other synonyms: incentive, stimulation, reason, enthusiasm, drive, ambition, determination, initiative.

mo·ti·vate (pronounced – mōdəˌvāt). Verb: motivate.
–       Provide someone with something (a motive) for doing something. Stimulate someone’s interest in or enthusiasm for doing something. Other synonyms: drive, push, propel, excite, incentivize.

I’m sure you’ve noticed, I did not list inspiration and motivation as each other’s synonyms (which they are). I see the difference between the two, I wonder if you are seeing the same thing. Inspiration and the act to inspire are strictly done out of goodwill; there is no immediate prize for inspiring someone or something. Whereas motivation and to motivate one, seems to tie a reward at the end of the action. Don’t get me wrong, one can earn a reward by starting something simply because they were inspired; however, motivation has a reward tied to it right from the start.

I always say you should learn something new every day – so if you are here, reading my post – BOOM! This is your lesson of the day! Ha ha!

Kidding aside, we all experience days where we just don’t want to get out of bed and simply want to do nothing. We might finally get up to use the washroom and glace in the mirror in hopes something will trigger a desire for us to get dressed and face the world. Let’s not confuse this with depression. I am talking about a day here and there, where you need a ‘mental health day’ or are simply feeling overworked and overwhelmed.

We are all motivated by something more often than we are inspired. You either go to school and are motivated by making good grades or your work and are motivated by receiving that paycheck. Where should we seek inspiration? Everywhere! Inspiration comes from acknowledging everything and everyone around you and trying to see things in different ways. One might be inspired by music or art, someone else by nature… I think gratitude has a lot to do with it. If you take in all the ‘small’ things, you never know – they just might turn out to be ‘large’ or ‘huge’ initiatives in the future.

When you find inspiration – Don’t forget to share with others.

Mentors Wanted!

I’m BAAAAAACK! and guess what? This consistency business I mentioned in the last post IS working.

So, today for the very first time (yes, first time!) – I am sitting at a café, dancing in my seat and writing. I love this! I also love working from home; however, with 3 very (VERY) active kiddos – it’s very difficult to focus. I’ve always wondered how anyone got anything done at these cafés without being distracted by people going in and out, music blastin’ and coffee grinders grinding, etc. I think when you are in the right mindset and have a game plan – you can execute it just about anywhere.

I stepped outside my comfort zone and will do it again (as soon as someone can watch my kids, he he he!).

If you have started to follow me and read my blog – you are probably wondering what it is that I am trying to say. In the next couple of posts, I will explain my little project and why iMINDeveryday.

iMINDeveryday stands for iMENTOR, iINSPIRE, iNETWORK and iDEVELOP – every day. (See that consistency thing is here again).

iMIND because it matters! It matters to set an example for my children, my family, my friends, my colleagues and my community. Each of us has the power to bring kindness and growth to others.

It starts with holding ourselves accountable. We must lead and live by example. We all have expectations of others but are we living up to the same standards we hold others to? Look deep down inside and ask yourself, if you are always the best version of yourself? I know I have a long way to go. Today is a new day. Make a commitment to yourself and try to MIND every-single-day.

Let’s start with this new, trendy word: MENTOR. Here is a basic definition:
men·tor (pronounced -ˈmenˌtôr’). Noun: mentor; plural noun: mentors.
An experienced and trusted adviser, guide, guru, counselor, consultant. Other synonyms: trainer, teacher, tutor, instructor, confidant

Some definitions refer to a mentor as someone who advises younger individuals… I do not agree. Below is my definition of a mentor.

Notice, how MENTOR starts with ‘MEN’ – know that a mentor can be any gender and any age. A mentor can be a good or a bad person. A mentor can have a direct or indirect impact on you and the best one; a mentor might just appear out of nowhere. Sometimes, someone leaves an impression on you without realizing it and vice versa. A mentor is someone you learn from, what you want to and don’t want to become.

I am constantly asked about my mentors and how I find them. I feel that people put so much pressure on this word. Please don’t! Instead silence yourself, open you mind, ears and eyes to the people around you. You are surrounded with mentors that have shaped you into the person you are today and others that will shape you into the person you will become tomorrow. I know this is deep! Lol! – but so very true. We put so much emphasis on following celebrities, CEOs of global companies, people out of reach and we often forget about our everyday surroundings. Mentors do not come with a label. There are organizations that volunteer mentorship services within various industries and disciplines but you can also develop these relationships yourself.

I have never considered myself a mentor. I am young and still have a lot of growing up to do. Who could possibly benefit from me and my experiences? – Well, to my surprise, I have a mini following of people that have benefited from formal and informal conversations with me and took the time to tell me how I’ve changed their life (yes…for the better).

I mentioned that mentors can be bad. There is probably a better word to describe them but since English is my second language, let’s just leave it at that. Believe it or not – you can actually learn from people’s poor choices and make life changing decisions to NOT follow in their footsteps/behaviors and even want to go above and beyond to become an advocate for those that can’t advocate for themselves.

I have luckily experienced both, of course more of the good ones. I appreciate the support and feedback from people that have crossed paths with me, which is what encouraged me to try to motivate you to MIND every single day.

Learn something new EVERYDAY…

This is only my second post but I have already found so many benefits that come with blogging…

If you are wondering what they are; here you go:

1) You learn what your shortcomings are REALLY FAST! Mine: CONSISTENCY or the lack of… lol!
• My plan was to post on a weekly basis and although I have plenty to write about, life gets in the way! I love that we are a busy family with great careers but celebrating someone or something every weekend has left me with little time to sort through my thoughts. The last thing I’ll do is to force post something just to do it but I promise to try to be more consistent. It’s a great exercise for me.

2) It is very therapeutic. I have about 1 million ideas per minute so writing them down is awesome.
• For those that know me personally, I am an action oriented individual and an optimist. If you share your concerns or doubts with me, I am sure I can turn them around to actionable and very attainable goals/tasks. Sometimes, it is much harder for me to do the same for my own challenges but I tend to talk them out and ultimately find a solution. Since having my babies, I’ve realized my memory is not what it once was… so writing down my ideas allows me to slow down a bit, think them through, sort out the crazy ones and focus on what matters.

3) Growth.
• Yep! In the last couple of weeks, my mind has grown and so has my heart. I have been ‘giving back’ but haven’t found the right outlet and balance that left me with feeling like I am truly making a difference. Let me explain because this is confusing. I am involved with many amazing organizations and have definitely been part of countless outreach but I always feel like it’s not enough and there is so much more that can be done. Now that I have had some time to think about my mission here; I’ve come to realize that my gift is to get others out of their comfort zone (in the most gentle way, of course). Through my ridiculously crazy optimistic mindset and persistence, I push people to try new things, see things in a different light and give their ideas and desires another chance. I live my life with NO REGRETS! I always say that you did the best you could with what you had at that time. You can’t go back and change it so learn from life and do it differently in the future.

I’m New Here…

I’m New Here… and so new to this blogging thing. I am curious to see how this turns out since I am learning the processes as I go along. Thanks for your patience!

You are probably wondering why I decided to start iMINDeveryday.com and what it means… well me too!! Ha Ha! Just kidding!

For quite some time now, I have been asked by my friends, coworkers, family and just random people I meet why I am so positive and optimistic all the time. People often refer to me as encouraging, motivating, inspiring and see me as a problem solver. I don’t care to be in the spotlight and toot my own horn; let me rephrase that – I love the spotlight but when I have a chance to honor someone, highlight their strengths and accomplishments, etc., hence the reason for this blog. I am constantly surrounded by amazing individuals that allow me to learn from them (directly or indirectly) so I want to share my knowledge with you. I have a gift of seeing the positive in everything and everyone (not always in me but I am working on it). My claim to fame is my smile. I always smile! Hopefully, I’ll make you smile too.

I hope to connect with people that need a little boost from time to time to be the best version of them self. The reason for this site is simple – I want to encourage each and every one of you to better yourself and your community by looking at yourself in the mirror and realizing that each movement starts with you. As much as I believe in team spirit; unless you commit to the cause 100% and take full accountability for your actions – there is no sense in creating a team that will function at less than 100%.

iMINDeveryday is a movement that will shape you and allow you to contribute to your community by being a Mentor, an Inspiration, Network with others and Develop your strengths as well as the strengths of others, as you cross their path. If we can all follow these simple actions everyday – this world will be a much better place. iMIND – Do you?

Repeat after me: iMENTOR, iINSPIRE, iNETWORK, iDEVELOP – EVERY DAY!

See you soon.
